Training and Journeyman Years

Georg Elser was a talented pupil, with particularly good technical and drawing skills from an early age. After attending school for seven years and breaking off an apprenticeship in the Königsbronn iron and steel works for health reasons, he trained in carpentry. He was soon regarded as an extremely good carpenter who valued careful work. Elser managed to make even the most complicated items and was proud of his profession. He had a marked sense of justice and strived hard to be paid adequately for all the work he did. He valued his independence, in both working and private life.

In the summer of 1924, Elser took a job in Heidenheim, making mainly kitchen cabinets and wardrobes. He quit early in 1925 to continue his training in the tradition of journeyman carpenters, but also to escape his complicated family conditions. Over the next seven years, he worked in various places around Lake Constance, in Germany and Switzerland.
